International medical graduates integral to provision of Victorian healthcare
27 September 2007
International medical graduates are integral to the provision of Victorian healthcare and medical boards have a responsibility to keep the community safe through appropriate and prompt screening, AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis says.
“Victoria is experiencing a severe doctor shortage. We rely on international medical graduates to make up the shortfall of locally trained doctors, particularly in regional and rural Victoria.
“Recent government increases in medical student places is a welcomed step, but it will take several years until these places produce fully qualified doctors.
“International medical graduates make a valuable contribution to ensuring health services meet the needs of Victorians today and they deserve greater support,” he said.
