Latrobe Regional Hospital specialist meeting welcome

AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates has welcomed confirmation Latrobe Regional Hospital management will meet with specialists on Tuesday (16/01/07).

Dr Yates said he hoped the meeting, to discuss rental contract arrangements for specialists providing public outpatient services, would resolve the current situation which has seen specialists withdraw services from the Gippsland area.

Latrobe Regional Hospital has proposed massive rental price increases and shortened hours for the hospital’s Traralgon consulting suites, which are used by private specialists seeing public patients from across the Gippsland area.

“There was very little consultation before the changes were proposed and the increases are so great they have made some services unviable. With limited public outpatient services available, these specialists provide a vital service for the people of Gippsland which must be retained.
“The meeting is a positive move and I am sure the hospital, through consultation with the doctors, will be able to find a solution which recognises the important public service these doctors provide and ensures the people of Gippsland have continued access to outpatient services,” Dr Yates said.
