Meeting planned to get merger back on track
A meeting will be held in Albury Wodonga on July 25, in a bid to get the cross border health service plan back on track.“The meeting will be held exactly four years to the day since the Victorian and NSW Governments signed an agreement for a cross border health service,” AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis said.
The meeting is a joint initiative by AMA Victoria and AMA NSW and aims to draw together doctors, health officials and politicians from both Victoria and NSW.
“The smooth implementation of the merger is important for those working at the health services and the community. However, progress has been extremely slow.”
“The community would benefit from a single health service with pooled funding and better integrated services.
“With no certainty about the structure of the health services in the area, it is also hard for the region to attract and retain doctors.
“The amalgamation has the potential to produce a large, high quality health service which can meet the needs of the community now and into the future. It is vital the public is given a clear timetable for when the merger will be complete,” Dr Travis said.
