Men can live longer
9 November 2007
A good relationship with a GP is the key to further reducing the life expectancy gab between men and women, says AMA Victoria, after an ABS report today revealed men are living longer.
“Public health campaigns have had an important role in reducing the life expectancy gap between men and women so far,” AMA Victoria President, Dr Doug Travis said, “but we still have a long way to go.”
“Men too often ignore the warning signs of health problems and shy away from talking about their health.
“Many lack the knowledge of simple risk indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass index.
“Most of the health problems encountered by men are modifiable through early intervention.
“All men should develop a relationship with a general practitioner as first step for assessing health and developing plans to reduce risk.
“Better health for men relies on working with a GP, talking through issues, and not waiting until it is too late.
“Education coupled with a solid partnership with a general practitioner can make a significant difference in men’s health.”
