Mental health services under pressure
AMA Victoria Council Chair and psychiatrist Professor Graham Burrows said concerns expressed by psychiatric staff at Maroondah and Box Hill hospitals highlighted the pressure on mental health services across the state.
“Mental health service shortages, including staff and beds, are a problem for the whole community. There is already significant pressure on mental health beds and if beds are not kept open it has a flow on effect on carers, families, GPs and the community.
“The State Government has invested significantly in mental health in recent years and is aware of the issues, but clearly much more work is still needed.
“Mental health bed shortages are not isolated to Maroondah and Box Hill, we need more mental health beds across the state.
“Hospital psychiatric staff are constantly under pressure to find beds and in particular, there is significant pressure on acute mental health beds.
“While there are no quick fixes, the issues raised today highlight the urgency in finding solutions,” Professor Burrows said.
