Overseas trained doctors essential
AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis said international medical graduates played an important role in the provision of healthcare to Victorians.Dr Travis was speaking after police questioned an overseas trained doctor in Queensland in relation to terrorist attacks in the UK.
“There is no justification for negativity towards international medical graduates working in Australia,” Dr Travis said.
“IMGs are an integral part of the medical profession in this state and indeed in the rest of the Australia and many are leaders in the profession.
“For many years Federal Governments did not fund enough medical school places at our universities, causing the severe doctor shortage we face today.
“The Government has recently increased Victorian medical student places, which will see an increase in the number of Australian trained doctors.
“However, it will be many years before these new student places will produce fully qualified doctors. IMGs play a critical role in ensuring health service needs of the community are met today,” Dr Travis said.
