Shepparton first country stop for new AMA Victoria President

Newly elected AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis will visit Shepparton today, in the first of a rolling campaign of visits to country Victoria.

Dr Travis will meet with a cross-section of specialist doctors during his visit, from GPs to anaesthetists, to discuss local issues.

Dr Travis, a urologist based in Footscray, was elected president of AMA Victoria in late May.

“I am keen to visit as many regional areas as possible during my presidency to ensure AMA Victoria can learn first hand the issues faced by country Victoria and continue to lobby effectively for improvements.

“The Goulburn Valley has not escaped the doctor shortage faced by country Victoria and has the added issue of a rapidly growing population.

“The health of the community is tied to access to health professionals and we know health outcomes in regional Victoria are worse than in metropolitan areas.

“A key issue for the Goulburn Valley is to ensure healthcare services can keep up with the rapidly growing demand, through improving access to doctors and resourcing the hospital to be able to provide the full range of services required for a vibrant, diverse and growing community,” Dr Travis said.
