Stay healthy this festive season
22 December 2007
AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis, is urging Victorians to stay hydrated, healthy and safe while enjoying festive season celebrations.
“Every festive season, doctors see patients with the same medical problems that could be prevented,” Dr Travis said today.
“So while things like drinking plenty of water and staying out of the sun seem like common sense, it’s worth reminding people that these simple measures will see them in better health to enjoy their celebrations.
“Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water, particularly when consuming alcohol or in extreme heat. A glass of water between alcoholic beverages is a good way to keep hydrated at Christmas parties,” he said.
“Try to stay out of the sun, but if you can’t, make sure you wear a hat, sunscreen and a light weight shirt.
“Avoid overindulging in alcohol and rich foods. Try serving platters of fresh fruit and vegetables as an alternative to salt and fat-rich foods.
“Find time to exercise: thirty minutes a day can make a real difference in improving metabolism, muscle strength and flexibility, endurance and respiratory function.”
Road accidents were a particular concern to doctors, Dr Travis said. The road toll increases substantially over the December and January holiday period every year.
“Plan ahead and don’t set unrealistic goals for journeys. Regular breaks can prevent fatigue and could save a life. Of course avoid driving and operating machinery while under the influence of alcohol and some prescription drugs, and always wear a seatbelt.”
