Vigilance required as peak flu season hits
With the peak flu season upon us, Victorians need to be vigilant and remember some simple measures to reduce the spread of influenza, AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis said today.“August is traditionally the peak flu season in Victoria and with several deaths from influenza confirmed in other states and one death under investigation in Victoria, it is timely to remind people in high risk groups it is not too late to have a flu vaccination.
“The A strain of influenza which resulted in recent deaths in other states is covered in the flu vaccine,” Dr Travis said.
“The number of cases of influenza in Victoria is low this year and Victorians should not panic. However, parents of young children and the elderly should be vigilant and if you notice flu-like symptoms see your doctor.”
Dr Travis said symptoms for influenza included fever, coughing, lethargy, muscle aches and pains and loss of appetite.
“These symptoms can represent a number of illnesses so you should see your family doctor to confirm your illness and the best treatment,” he said.
“If you become unwell with influenza or a cold you should try to limit the spread of illness to others.
“Always cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or your arm. In addition, also make sure you have good personal hygiene such as regularly washing your hands with soap.
“If you are unwell, don’t go to work and avoid public places,” he said.
