Village Life closures will spell disaster for health and aged care services

AMA Victoria President Dr Mark Yates today called on the Federal and State Governments to take action to ensure appropriate accommodation is provided for the residents of Village Life retirement villages, who are expected to be evicted in coming weeks.

More than 150 residents at Victorian Village Life retirement accommodation at Ballarat, Shepparton, Mildura and Warrnambool, are expected to be evicted in May,

“It is a disgrace that elderly people can so easily be turned-out of their accommodation. The welfare of these elderly residents is of great concern.

“If these residents are evicted it will spell disaster for hospitals and aged care in these areas.

“There are already long waits to access nursing home or hostel accommodation, with a minimum of an eight week wait to place one elderly person in hostel accommodation.

“If a large number of people are all trying to access accommodation at the same time, the system, which is already struggling, will not cope.”

In addition, Dr Yates said the short notice period could mean residents, who have previously been living semi-independently, will have no where else to turn but hospital, putting enormous pressure on hospital aged care services.

“These elderly residents are vulnerable and there should be a structure in place to ensure they are protected,” Dr Yates said.

“This situation will be causing enormous stress for these elderly people. The Federal and State Governments have a responsibility to ensure vulnerable people in our community have security of accommodation,” Dr Yates said.
