We need more beds (The Age, letter to the editor)

29 November 2007
The State Government has added only 61 extra beds to Victorian public hospitals in the last six years and the resulting capacity issues are creating strains in our emergency departments (“Patients wait as demand strains hospitals”, The Age, 28/11). High occupancy rates lead to inefficiency in our public hospitals and affect the standard of care. This means cancelled operations, delays in clearing patients from emergency departments, increased in-patient length of stay, poor responsiveness to patients’ needs, and worse patient outcomes.
Victoria needs to increase our public hospital bed numbers. We hope to see the new Government respond the Victoria’s public hospital capacity problems and address the federal shortfall in public hospital funding.
