World Mental Health Day: A good day to think about mental health

9 October 2007

AMA Victoria is encouraging Victorians to take time out on World Mental Health Day, Wednesday 10 October, to think about their own mental health.

Dr Doug Travis, AMA Victoria President, says mental health is an important part of overall health and a serious issue in Victorian communities.

“Looking after your mental health is just as important as taking care of your body,” Dr Travis said.

“World Mental Health Day is a perfect time for individuals to consider their own mental health and ways it can be improved over the next 365 days*.

“This may mean undertaking regular exercise and maintaining a healthy, balanced diet to reduce stress levels, or visiting your GP to discuss options for maintaining and improving mental health.

“Early identification and treatment of mental illness is important, so building a good relationship with your GP is a vital step in looking after body and mind.”

World Mental Health Day is an initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) and is co-sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
