AMA Victoria & Victoria police: protecting local doctors
1 May 2008
AMA Victoria and Victoria Police are helping local doctors to better protect themselves against increasing levels of aggression and violence in their consulting rooms with a Practice Security Briefing session at the Horsham Golf Club on next Thursday 8 May 2008.
The free session will run from 5.15pm to 6.00pm. All doctors and medical practice staff are encouraged to attend.
AMA Victoria’s Director of Training and Professional Support Vicki Bradford says the association developed the briefing sessions to respond to concerns from local doctors.
“Many GPs and specialists are not equipped or adequately trained to deal with aggressive behaviour from patients,” she says.
“Unfortunately doctors can be seen as targets for attacks. Doctors use prescription pads and may have drugs on their premises. Inadequate security, particularly for doctors undertaking home visits or operating outside business hours, is also a problem.
“The briefing session aims to equip health professionals with the skills to deal with aggressive behaviour. Doctors will learn about personal safety, home visit safety, practice design, armed robbery, and contacting police.”
