AMA Victoria to meet with Warrnambool doctors

19 May 2008

AMA Victoria will meet with Warrnambool doctors tomorrow (Tuesday) to hear their concerns about local issues and discuss health care in the region.

“Issues high on the agenda for local doctors are public hospital capacity problems, attracting and retaining doctors to the region, and providing better health services to locals,” says AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis.

“Warrnambool doctors play an important role in shaping AMA Victoria’s rural and regional health initiatives and we look forward to their input at tomorrow’s meeting.

“Medical workforce shortages are of particular concern for AMA Victoria and we have recently called on the Brumby Government to inject $116.5 million over four years as a rural medical workforce rescue package.”

AMA Victoria’s South Western subdivision meeting will feature keynote speaker Victorian Chief Health Officer Dr John Carnie. In his presentation, Dr Carnie will outline the State Government’s plans to fluoridate tap water in the South West of the State.

“Fluoridation is a safe and effective means of protecting the dental health of all Victorians. The move to fluoridate the tap water in the Geelong and Ballarat regions is long overdue,” says Dr Travis.
