Calls to ban fruit and confectionery flavoured cigarettes
3 April 2008
AMA Victoria supports the Federal Health Minister’s move to encourage states to ban fruit and confectionery flavoured cigarettes.
“These products are marketed towards teenagers, which is unacceptable,” said AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis.
“The Victorian Government should to follow the lead of NSW and ban the sale of fruit and confectionery flavoured cigarettes.”
Dr Travis said smoking rates have been in decline over the past few decades, but tobacco smoking is still responsible for the greatest burden on the health of all Australians.
“Tobacco smoking is the largest single preventable cause of death and disease in Australia. We need to send a clear message that smoking is no longer viewed as normal, but is regarded as unhealthy and unnecessary.”
