Doctor receives medical prize medal, 49 years on

6 August 2008

Eighty-one year old Red Hill resident and former pathologist Dr Kenneth McLean received his prestigious British Medical Association Annual Meeting Prize medal last week, 49 years after he was named prize winner.

Dr McLean was awarded the British Medical Association Annual Meeting Prize for original work in medicine or allied science in 1959 but was living overseas at the time so he could not accept his medal.

AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis presented Dr McLean with his medal at AMA Victoria’s annual President’s reception at AMA House last week. More than 80 guests attended the reception including AMA federal President Dr Rosanna Capolingua.

“It’s very touching,” Dr McLean told guests. “I learnt early on that if you start running out of challenges, look for another one.”

Dr Travis also awarded the 2008 Crawford Mollison Prize to Dr Catriona McLean – Dr Kenneth McLean’s daughter – for her academic and diagnostic contributions to the field and for her contribution to the training of pathology registrars.

Dr Catriona McLean is Head of Department and Professor of Anatomical Pathology at The Alfred Hospital. She teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate level at Monash University, is Chair of the Pathology Board of Education at Monash and is honorary Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Melbourne.

“Education of the medical students and trainees in specialist fields is central to everything I do,” says Dr Catriona McLean. “I was honoured to receive the award. It’s great to be recognised by my peers.”

The Crawford Mollison Prize is awarded by the Medical Society of Victoria, as trustee, to a Victorian doctor who has made the most notable contribution to pathology. The Victorian Committee of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia assists AMA Victoria in choosing the recipient.

Past recipients of the award include Dr Donald Metcalf, 1968; Dr Erik Pihl, 1977; and Dr Peter Campbell & Dr Christopher Low, 1980.
