Doctors encourage families to walk to school on Friday 2 May

The Australian Medical Association Victoria is encouraging families to take part in Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 2 May 2008.

“This is a great opportunity for parents and children to spend time together while getting the exercise they need to keep fit and healthy,” said AMA Victoria Vice President Dr Harry Hemley.

“Leaving the car at home and walking to school will have a positive impact on the environment. It will also give parents the opportunity to teach their children safe pedestrian behaviour.”

Dr Hemley said lack of physical activity can lead to serious health problems and many Victorians are significantly heavier than their ideal weight.

“A combination of regular exercise and good nutrition is needed to achieve a healthy weight. The benefits cascade – healthy parents, healthy children and healthy families. With luck it might even become contagious.”

Walk Safely to School Day is organised by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, sponsored by the Federal Department of Health and Ageing and supported by the Heart Foundation, Planet Ark, beyondblue, The Cancer Council and Diabetes Australia.
