Doctors need help (Shepparton News, letter to the editor)

6 February 2008

International Medical Graduates are valued members of our rural and regional communities and are increasingly relied upon to bridge the medical workforce shortage which resulted from inadequate numbers of medical places a decade ago.

Providing support and assistance for International Medical Graduates to work in rural and regional Victoria is essential in maintaining Victoria’s high standards of medical training (Key program left without funding, Shepparton News 5/2). Professional programs for doctors also allow Victoria to compete with NSW and Queensland in a bid to attract doctors to the state.

AMA Victoria is urging the State Government to fund a Centre for International Medical Graduate Support. The proposed Centre would provide International Medical Graduates (IMGs) with clinical support, assistance in preparing for examinations, and training to allow IMGs to become the teachers of our next generation of doctors.

Over the next 5 years Victoria is heading into its worst ever doctor drought. We need to develop new solutions to tackle Victoria’s doctor shortages.
