Doctors welcome preventative health initiatives

18 March 2008

AMA Victoria welcomes the State Government’s $600m WorkHealth initiative to fund preventative health screening for Victoria’s 2.6 million workers.

“This is a much larger investment than we had anticipated,” said AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis. “The Government should be commended for this initiative which demonstrates long-term thinking and a vision of a healthier Victoria.

“Individuals will benefit from education and better health care and employers will benefit from increased productivity and a reduction in absenteeism due to chronic diseases,” said Dr Travis.

Lost productivity resulting from obesity alone in Australia has been estimated at $1.7 billion per year.

“Workplaces are the next frontier for health care. Hopefully this will lead to innovative models for preventative health care through the workplace, particularly targeted to men. This world-first program is likely to make a real difference.”

“Chronic disease prevention is vital, not only for the individual, but also for employers, the economy and the community.”

Obesity and overweight has been linked to several chronic diseases.

“Apart from quitting smoking, losing weight is the best thing you can do for your long-term health.”
