Doctors welcome tobacco reform plan
21 August 2008
AMA Victoria today welcomed the State Government’s Tobacco Control Strategy proposal to ban smoking in cars carrying children.
“The effects of passive smoking are harmful, especially to children, and that harm increases when the child is in a confined space such as a car,” AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis said.
“We are delighted the government is talking this step to further protect children from passive smoke and proposing a number of measures to move forward on tobacco reform.”
The Tobacco Control Strategy includes proposed restrictions on point of sale advertising, measures to ensure government school grounds are smoke free and Ministerial power to ban youth-oriented products such as fruit and confectionery-flavoured cigarettes.
“This is the next step in further reducing the prevalence of smoking in Victoria through legislation, education and encouragement,” Dr Travis said.
“These restrictions will strengthen the message to the community that smoking is no longer viewed as normal, but is an unnecessary and unhealthy habit that leads to death and disease.”
AMA Victoria looks forward to making its submission to the Tobacco Control Strategy.
