Dr Mukesh Haikerwal recovering following attack
29 September 2008
The attack on former AMA president Dr Mukesh Haikerwal was random, senseless and totally unprovoked, AMA Victoria President, Dr Doug Travis said today.
“We understand that his injuries are serious but that he is making good progress in hospital following urgent surgery. We do not know how long he will be in hospital.
“We are shocked and saddened at this news,” Dr Travis said.
“It appears that Dr Haikerwal was taking an evening stroll near his home in Williamstown when the incident occurred on Saturday evening.
“The matter is in the hands of the police.
“This was a senseless and random attack on a member of the public,” Dr Travis said.
Dr Haikerwal was President of AMA from 2005 to 2007 and President of AMA Victoria 2001 to 2003. He is currently a member of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission.
