Every buck counts (The Age, letter to the editor)

28 November 2008

Last year Prime Minister Rudd told Australia that in health care reform, "the buck stops with me". Despite these assurances,
Victorian public hospital performance has declined markedly over the past year.
More Victorians than ever are missing out on care in clinically appropriate times and the state's growing population is putting a strain on beds, nurses, doctors and infrastructure.
The Victorian Government has been increasing funding into public hospitals but the Commonwealth has been missing in action. For every dollar of State
Government hospital funding, the Commonwealth is putting in just 68 cents.
A fairer Commonwealth financial contribution to health is essential to deliver the innovation and reform our public hospitals need. I hope today's
Council of Australian Governments health funding announcement delivers the other 32 cents in the buck.
