Government hiding hospital performance figures?

30 April 2008

AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis has asked the Government today why it is delaying release of the Your Hospitals report, which details performance data for Victorian public hospitals.

The report was due at the end of March and is now a month behind schedule.

Dr Travis was concerned that the government was hiding the figures to mask a further decline in hospital performance.

“The last Your Hospitals report revealed that over 250 000 Victorians received clinically inappropriate care in Victorian public hospitals,” Dr Travis said. “Last time, we saw that elective surgery was down, waiting lists were up, productivity was down in some key areas, and more than one in five Victorians failed to receive clinically appropriate care.”

“In 2007 a quarter of a million Victorians missed out on clinically appropriate care. What is the government hiding by not releasing the current figures?”

Dr Travis says doctors are reporting that things are getting worse rather than getting better.

“The government needs to release the Your Hospitals report so we can work out what improvements are needed and how we can better meet the health care needs of the community.

“We need openness and transparency for the government, hospitals and the medical profession to work together to improve patient care,” said Dr Travis. “Hiding the figures will not lead to the necessary reforms.”
