International Women’s Day: a healthy diary date
7 March 2008
International Women’s Day (Saturday 8 March) presents an ideal opportunity for all Australian women to take a moment to consider their own health, AMA Victoria Vice President Dr Kate Duncan said today.
“This is a day celebrated by women all over the world - and for so many reasons,” Dr Duncan said. “But with myriad issues affecting the health and wellbeing of women, this important day can also be a personal diary date to consider health.”
“Medicine is changing all the time and there are constant improvements to celebrate. Cervical cancer vaccination is just one example - vaccination should reduce the rate of cervical cancer among Australian women.”
As well as understanding the importance of exercise, good nutrition and adopting a sensible work-life balance, Dr Duncan said it is important for women to build good relationships with their general practitioner to look after their health.
“Early identification and treatment of illness is important, so building a good relationship with your GP is a vital step in looking after body and mind.”
