Junior medical staff threaten action
21 October 2008
A meeting of Royal Melbourne Hospital residents and registrars has called on the state Health Minister to act on the Ministerial Review of Victorian Public Health Medical Staff and the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement with AMA Victoria.
They voted that unless there was a positive outcome on both fronts, they would meet again to consider potential action.
They believed the Minister’s failure to act could risk quality patient care and patient safety.
The meeting called on the Minister to:
-
implement the substantive Recommendations of his Ministerial Review of Victorian Public Health Medical Staff; and
-
intervene to immediately finalise an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement with AMA Victoria.
It also voted that the Minister must guarantee that a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement delivers:
-
medical salaries that are comparable with our interstate colleagues; recognise the high costs of our medical education; and
-
high level compliance with our rostering, overtime and training time entitlements.
The resolution added: “Royal Melbourne Hospital junior medical staff are appalled that the Minister for Health has failed to implement the substantive recommendations of his own review into Victorian public health medical staff.
“Royal Melbourne Hospital junior staff demand that the Minister acts immediately to keep and train the quality medical workforce the Victorian community have the right to expect.
“Royal Melbourne Hospital junior medical staff fear that the Minister’s failure to act will risk quality patient care and patient safety.”
“If the Minister chooses to not meaningfully respond, Royal Melbourne Hospital junior medical staff today resolve to reconvene and consider potential action in support of a sustainable Victorian public health system.”
