Medical community celebrates AMA Victoria achievements

Victoria’s medical and health community celebrated the achievements of AMA Victoria over the past 12 months at its annual President’s Reception at AMA House last night.

AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis outlined the highlights of the past year and challenges of the future to more than 80 guests, including AMA federal President, Dr Rosanna Capolingua and Shadow Minister for Health, Ms Helen Shardey.

“We have had a strong year in lobbying the State Government concerning anti-smoking proposals, obesity prevention, preventative health and super clinics,” said Dr Travis. “The outstanding achievement of the year was the government’s announcement of the $600m work health initiative. This is a world first and hopefully will be a key component in improving the health of Victorians.”

“Going forward, we will be in there representing the interests of our members to achieve the best possible outcome for them and their communities.”

Dr Travis told guests that the strengths of AMA Victoria’s policy had come from garnering ideas from AMA Victoria members and the wider medical and health community.

“It’s through this process that the AMA derives its strength and power because in the end, the policy that we bring forward comes from a broad base that is well thought-out.”

Dr Travis said the ongoing major challenge over the next few years would be helping to provide the solutions to ensure adequate training opportunities for the next generation of doctors.

Dr Travis presented the Crawford Mollison Prize – which is awarded every three years to a Victorian doctor who has made the most notable contribution to pathology – to Dr Catriona McLean, for her academic and diagnostic contributions to pathology, and in particular, to the training of registrars.

“I was honoured to receive the award; It’s great to be recognised by my peers,” said Dr McLean. “Education of the medical students and trainees in specialist fields is central to everything I do.”

Dr Travis made a special presentation to Dr Kenneth McLean – Dr Catriona McLean’s father – who was awarded the Crawford Mollison Prize in 1959 but was living overseas at the time and did not receive his medal.
