More beds, please (The Age, letter to the editor)
2 August 2008
Victoria has grown by 82,000 people in the past year (The Age,1/8). For this level of growth we should be seeing an extra four acute hospital beds added each week but we are seeing the equivalent of less than one. We now have a shortage of more than 600 hospital beds to serve Victoria's needs.
More Victorians and fewer available beds results in cancelled operations, delays in clearing patients from emergency departments, increased inpatient length of stay, poor responsiveness to patients' needs and worse patient outcomes.
The Premier has decided he wants to pause Victoria's growth. I hope he has a catch-up plan for our public hospitals.
