New mental health services welcomed
11 January 2008
AMA Victoria has welcomed expanded funding for youth mental health services in Victoria, announced by the Federal Government this week.
AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis said that young people at risk of mental health and drug and alcohol problems will benefit from three new headspace Communities of Youth Services centres in regional Victoria; in Gippsland, the south-west and the Mornington Peninsula.
Dr Travis says that mental health is one of the most important priorities for the Australian community. “Part of the challenge of mental health is to incorporate it into all that we do, to “mainstream” concepts of mental health into all health care,” he said.
“We desperately need to improve mental health services for young people and children,” Dr Travis said. “These new services announced by the Federal Government will help us ensure that young people in regional Victoria receive the care and attention they need.”
