Nice hospital, sorry you won’t be allowed in
25 June 2008
The Auditor-General’s report into the new Royal Women’s Hospital is another example of the Victorian Government failing to build enough hospital capacity to meet Victoria’s health needs, according to AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis.
The Auditor-General found that a bigger hospital would have been more cost effective than using existing hospitals to handle rising maternity needs.
“Many of the bigger maternity services are already under pressure,” Dr Travis said, “which has been exacerbated by the closure of metropolitan obstetric services such as Rosebud, Williamstown and Moorabbin.
“The mistakes made in building a nice new hospital without increasing the number of beds at the Royal Women’s Hospital should not be repeated,” Dr Travis said. “Victoria has a serious bed shortage, and the State Government must take action.
“Victoria has an increasing population and birth rate. Our hospitals have in the recent past been the most efficient in Australia, but the latest damning hospital performance figures show that our performance is slipping. We must increase capacity to improve productivity. We need more beds, more doctors and more nurses.”
