One new GP for half a million new Victorians

20 February 2008

The number of general practitioners in Victoria has increased by just one doctor in the 10 years between 1996 and 2006 while the state population rose by more than half a million, government figures reveal.

“Victoria’s doctor shortage is already affecting Victorian communities’ access to primary care,” said AMA Victoria Vice President Dr Harry Hemley. “Many Victorians, in regional and metropolitan areas, simply cannot get an appointment to see their GP.

“But forecasts show the worst is yet to come. In the next five years Victoria will face the largest shortage of doctors the state has ever seen.

“This is a pretty grim picture for Victorian health care, but there are ways we can ease the state’s doctor shortages.

“We need to attract doctors to general practice. Increasing training places is a good start, but we also need to look incentives for GPs to take trainees and for graduates to train in general practice.”
