Solarium regulations welcomed

1 February 2008

New regulations for the solarium industry starting today have been welcomed by AMA Victoria.

The Victorian Government’s new regulations will require licensing, impose age limits and improve the display of warnings alerting solarium users to the risks of developing skin cancer.

“No matter what your skin type, you can develop skin cancer from recreational exposure to UV rays,” said AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis. “Solarium users may be exposed to intense UVA and UVB rays much stronger than the midday sun.”

“Most of the sun damage to our skin is done in the first two decades of our life, so we are pleased that the Health Minister has prohibited children under 16 from using sun-tanning units.”

“These new regulations should dissuade people from using solariums,” Dr Travis said. “If fewer people use solariums, we will have less cancer.”
