Statement from Dr Mukesh Haikerwal

Family General Practitioner and former AMA president Dr Mukesh Haikerwal said today that he considered himself “lucky and blessed to be cared for in the Australian health system with the many highly motivated and exceptionally talented medical and healthcare staff of all disciplines”.
“The overwhelming support received by me and my family from many wonderful people has touched me greatly,” he said. “I am eternally full of gratitude for the power, depth and humanity of our community.
“Regarding my health, I am slowly making progress, taking one day at a time and I hope it will not be too long before I am able to apply myself to the care of my patients and my representational duties bettering our health system.”
Dr Haikerwal said he was pleased with the progress of the police investigation, their dedication, diligence and professionalism that brings hope, comfort and confidence to the community.
“In the interests of the police inquiry I am not able to speak publicly about the matter at this time or indeed until the conclusion of the matter.”
