The weighting game (Herald Sun, letter to the editor)
19 February 2008
Congratulations to the Herald Sun on your Kids’ Food Plan series.
This excellent initiative with the Royal Children’s Hospital is a timely reminder for every parent to take responsibility for their children’s nutrition, despite relentless pressure from the junk food advertisers.
This preventable disease has the potential to cost the next generation tens of millions of dollars as doctors deal with an avalanche of type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and other serious ailments. There is no one fix.
There are multiple considerations that include parents’ purchasing decisions in supermarkets, misleading food labelling, food company commercials, the easy takeaway option, education and government vigilance.
AMA Victoria has already called on the State Government to change labelling regulations and seriously address food advertising targeting children.
The children are our future; governments must heed advice and muster the will to legislate – for population health, not for popularity.
