Victorian Medical Directory: making referrals easy
5 December 2008
Doctors will now be able to access referral information with ease following today’s launch of AMA Victoria’s online doctor search database, the Victorian Medical Directory.
The Victorian Medical Directory (VMD) is an online version of AMA Victoria’s Blue Book, which has ceased publication, prompting hundreds of requests from Victorian doctors for a new service.
The VMD is available at www.amavic.com.au and listings include Victorian medical practitioners’ clinic details and craft group. Doctors can also include extra information to attract suitable referrals, such as areas of interest and languages spoken.
The search function allows doctors seeking to refer patients to search for a practitioner by location, craft group, gender, languages spoken, special interest, VMO status or the provision of medico-legal services.
AMA Victoria Vice President and Melbourne GP Dr Harry Hemley said the service would increase the quality of referrals by ensuring the patients’ special needs were met.
“It can be difficult searching for sub-specialties is some craft groups, particularly if the patient requests a particular practitioner gender or has a preference for a doctor who speaks a language other than English,” he said.
“The Victorian Medical Directory cuts out much of the effort for the referring doctor and you end up with the best practitioner fit for your patient. It’s designed to make the doctors’ working life easier.”
Listing in the VMD is free for all Victorian doctors. To list in the VMD call AMA Victoria Member Services on (03) 9280 8722 or download a form from www.amavic.com.au.
Victorian medical practitioners can buy a bold listing or advertise on the directory web pages.
Access to the VMD is free for AMA Victoria members but a fee applies for non-members.
It is anticipated that in 2009 the VMD will be expanded to encompass registered allied health practitioners, lawyers, insurance companies, hospitals, universities and colleges.
