AMA Victoria joins nurse practitioner legislation fight

2 September 2009.

AMA Victoria’s President Dr Harry Hemley joined more than 300 Australian doctors today when he signed Australian Doctor magazine ’s open letter to Health Minister Nicola Roxon, outlining concerns over increased rights for nurse practitioners.

The open letter notes the lack of information surrounding the Federal Government’s nurse practitioner policy which would allow nurse practitioners to diagnose, treat, refer to specialists and prescribe under the PBS.

The letter says: "As Health Minister, you have insisted nurse practitioners must ‘collaborate’ with doctors. But the term does not appear in the draft legislation and ministers have made no attempt to define ‘collaborative care’.

"Before this legislation becomes law, the public and the wider health profession also need reassurance that the patient’s GP will continue to oversee their care, as well as the tests, medications and referrals they receive."
