Doctors welcome new Department of Health

AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley has welcomed the Victorian Government’s plans to establish a new Department of Health and split the Department of Human Services.
“Victoria’s health system is under significant pressure with workforce shortages, a growing population and the complexities that come with caring for an ageing population,” Dr Hemley said.
“A dedicated Department of Health will allow senior departmental officials to have a greater focus on patient care, and build a culture of accountability and performance.”
“This is an opportunity for the government to start some real planning for hospital reform and look towards a future of innovation so that Victoria’s public hospitals can provide world-class healthcare.”
