Drive safely this festive season
22 December 2009.
AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley today urged Victorians to drive safely this holiday season and take extra care on highways and country roads.
"Victoria’s road accident death toll is currently five per cent lower than last year," he said, "so let’s try to keep it that way."
"Many of us are not used to driving on highways or country roads, where conditions can change quickly. Please take care on country roads in particular.
"If the roads are wet, make sure you slow down.
"If you are heading away, plan ahead and don’t set unrealistic goals for journeys. Take time to stop and have a look at this wonderful country.
"Regular breaks can prevent fatigue and could save a life."
Dr Hemley urged drivers to take responsibility for their actions. "Remember than common sense and courtesy will improve the safety of yourself and others," he said.
"Victorian doctors deal with horrific injuries from road accidents. It is worth reminding drivers and passengers to always wear a seat belt in the car, and don’t drive while under the influence of alcohol."
