Eye clinic waiting times list hidden (Herald Sun, letter to the editor)

24 September 2009.

Lengthy waits for cataract surgery in Victorian public hospitals will blow out unless the Federal Government reverses its plan to halve the Medicare rebate for these operations.

Visually impaired patients wait more than 100 days for sight restoring cataract surgery at the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital. And that doesn't include the outpatient clinic waiting times that the Government refuses to make public: often more than a year. Elderly patients shouldn't be forced to wait longer with a reduced quality of life than they already do.

The Federal Government should consider the impact of public waiting lists before implementing this decision.
