Health misses out in economic stimulus package

3 February 2009

AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis said the association was disappointed the Federal Government’s proposed $42 billion economic stimulus package had overlooked health care infrastructure boosts.

“Demand for health care is growing at a rapid rate, and more and more patients are being treated in hospitals with crumbling infrastructure and inadequate facilities,” he said. “It’s worrying to see health care miss out in the stimulus package.”

The Federal Government plans to spend $28.8 billion on schools, community housing, energy efficiency measures for homes, community infrastructure, roads and tax breaks for businesses.

Dr Travis said rural hospitals across the country were in most need of infrastructure funding boosts. “We’ve got rural hospitals with outdated equipment, leaking roofs, and inadequate facilities,” he said. “The disparity between rural and metropolitan health is growing and it is becoming more difficult to attract doctors to towns with poor facilities.

“Expanding general practice teaching infrastructure and e-health investment are also high priorities for federal infrastructure funding.”
