Health warning in extreme heat
12 January 2009
Tomorrow’s temperature is set to spike and doctors are urging Victorians to take precautions to avoid heat exhaustion and dehydration over the next few days.
AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis says Victorians may need to modify their routines in these temperatures.
“Listen to your body – if you feel thirsty, drink more water and if you feel tired or dizzy, rest. Don’t exercise too strenuously, particularly if your fitness levels are low,” says Dr Travis.
“Hospital admissions increase in extreme heat, particularly among the elderly and children, who are more prone to heat stroke and fluid loss.
“Children should be encouraged to wear a hat and carry a bottle of water, as well as keeping out of the sun.
“Elderly people on medications such as fluid tablets have less flexibility in their system to deal with the pressures of dehydration so it is very important they keep adequately hydrated.
“Remember that temperatures in vehicles also soar on hot days, so never leave children or pets unattended in cars.”
