It’s still hot – keeping healthy

31 January 2009

While the extreme temperatures have abated in Melbourne, it’s still going to be hot for several days. Also, many parts of the state will still be experiencing extreme heat.

AMA Victoria President Dr Doug Travis said Victorians need to stay vigilant to protect their health and to look after each other.

“Try to stay indoors to keep cool. If you do venture out into the heat, stay in the shade and make sure you’re prepared with long sleeves, a broad-rimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen,” he said.

“In these prolonged periods of heat it’s important that you listen to your body – drink plenty of water and if you feel dizzy, take a rest.”

Dr Travis said the elderly and children were more prone to heat stroke and fluid loss.

“Please make sure we look after family, friends and neighbours,” Dr Travis said. “With continuing hot weather and possible threats of power shortages, many Victorians are still vulnerable.

“Take the time to call elderly relatives, or to check on an elderly neighbour. It will only take a couple of minutes, but it may save someone who’s in distress.

“Think about conserving energy. If you’ve got air conditioning, invite some friends to share it with you. If you’ve got a pool, invite the neighbours to come around.

“A time of adversity provides a great opportunity for neighbours to get to know each other and help each other out.

“The last few days have been extreme, and we need to keep looking after ourselves and each other.”

Dr Travis confirmed that doctors had been busy with patients affected by the heat, and asked all Victorians to stay healthy. “If we all use common sense and look after each other, we’ll be able to stay as healthy as possible.”
