Melbourne GP elected president

27 May 2009.

Northcote-based General Practitioner Dr Harry Hemley is the new President of AMA Victoria.

Dr Hemley, who was elected unopposed at the association’s annual general meeting last night, takes over from Melbourne urologist Dr Doug Travis.

Dr Travis has led AMA Victoria for the past two years.

Dr Hemley paid tribute to Dr Travis who, he said, had not only been a strong, constant and tireless voice for doctors but also a passionate campaigner for quality healthcare for all Victorians.

“Dr Travis has been an outstanding President and my task now is to build on all the achievements and maintain the momentum,” he said.

Dr Hemley said he was committed to driving the agendas for AMA’s Victoria key priorities. These included:

  • Addressing the “appalling state” of information technology in public hospitals – “a situation so bad that doctors are unable to treat patients efficiently and effectively”.
  • Training for junior doctors: “We will have an influx of new doctors in 2013, training places are needed for all graduates and with this comes the need for experienced teachers and clinical support time.”
  • Maintaining the war on bureaucratic red tape – “a burden that costs the State two million consultations and $13,000 per GP in lost productivity every year.”Dr Hemley said the global financial crisis would continue to present pressures for doctors and patients.“Social justice is an issue close to my heart,” he said. “We have to ensure that quality healthcare is available to everybody – no matter where they live or the size of their pockets.”As well as running his general practice Dr Hemley is actively involved with St Vincent De Paul Ozanam Day Centre for Homeless Men.

Nominated to the AMA Victoria Board in 2006, Dr Hemley is a former president of the Melbourne Division of General Practice. He also worked for the Commonwealth Government’s General Practice Think Tank on the development of Divisions of General Practice.

Dr Hemley also has a keen interest in issues faced by rural GPs in Victoria, having sat on the board of the Rural Workforce Agency of Victoria. He is also passionate about healthy eating and exercise.

Dr Hemley is married to Denise, who is also his practice manager. He has five children – three boys and two girls.
