WorkHealth checks for AMA Victoria staff
12 November 2009.
AMA Victoria is the latest workplace to sign up to the Victorian Government’s WorkHealth initiative and is offering free preventative health checks to its staff today. The simple health check aims to increase individuals’ understanding of their risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
AMA Victoria CEO Jane Stephens said the Victorian Government’s $600 million funding commitment to the WorkHealth initiative would make a real difference to the long term health of Victoria’s 2.6 million workers.
"Chronic disease prevention is vital, not only for the individual, but also for employers, the economy and the community," Ms Stephens said. "Individuals will benefit from education and better health care and employers will benefit from increased productivity and a reduction in absenteeism due to chronic diseases.
"I’m pleased that AMA Victoria staff have an opportunity to participate in the program. The WorkHealth Initiative is the first program of its type in Australia, and has the strong support of the Australian Medical Association Victoria.
"AMA Victoria encourages all businesses to sign up for a WorkHealth check."
The health checks are voluntary and consist of a questionnaire and measurement of waist circumference, cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose. Participants receive immediate feedback and depending on their results, may be advised to see their doctor for further tests and advice. All results are confidential.
Lost productivity resulting from obesity alone in Australia has been estimated at $1.7 billion per year.
