AMA Victoria supports school breakfast club
07 December 2010.
AMA Victoria’s recent donation to Melbourne Citymission will keep the Meadows Primary School’s Breakfast Club running for another year. The Breakfast Club was established by Melbourne Citymission five years ago to ensure children have access to a nutritious breakfast and serves around 30 children.
AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley said he was pleased the association could support a program which provides a nutritious breakfast to local children. "A healthy breakfast provides children with the energy they need to get through the day," he said.
"Skipping this impacts on students’ behaviour and can affect concentration in class, performance in sports and the arts and even their attitude to homework."
The Breakfast also gives children a place to go if they arrive at school early, allowing them to make friends and socialise with their fellow breakfast club mates. For the mums it’s a time when they can get together for a chat and make new friends.
For parents or people in the community, in what is an area of considerable disadvantage, the training and food handling skills offered to them by Melbourne Citymission followed by paid employment at the club, can be a stepping stone into further employment after many years of not working.
"Many people may not have worked before and now they’re given the chance to build on this experience to pursue other employment opportunities” said Jen Deurwaarder, Melbourne Citymission’s General Manager, Children and Disability Services.
"It’s wonderful to see the kids’ socialising and fantastic to meet their families. We’d really like to thank the AMA for their wonderful support. We’ve been incredibly lucky to have had parents from the school trained in food handling and employed by MCM. Most have been employed since the inception of the club 5 years ago!"
Principal of Meadow’s Primary School, Mr Rob Greenacre said “It makes such a huge difference to the children’s start to the day. The nutritious, healthy foods they have for breakfast has shown a noticeable difference in the classroom: in their attention span and their concentration. They no longer fall asleep!"
