AMA Victoria welcomes the Hon David Davis MLC appointment as Minister for Health and Ageing

2 December 2010.

AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley has welcomed the appointment of the Hon David Davis MLC as Minister for Health and Ageing in the Baillieu Government, and wished him success in improving the health of all Victorians.

Mr Davis is well known to AMA Victoria and its members, and already has a strong grasp of the portfolio.

“The Minister has been a studious and effective opposition health spokesman, which will serve him well in Government,” Dr Hemley said. “I have enjoyed a solid working relationship with Minister Davis, and have appreciated the opportunity to discuss a number of issues across the portfolio over the last two years."

Minister Davis has been talking to doctors across the state over the last year to prepare for the role in government. He has debated former Minister Daniel Andrews at AMA Victoria Council, spoken to the AMA Victoria doctors in training group, had a discussion with the chairs of senior medical staff for Victorian public hospitals, and attended a number of regional AMA Victoria meetings. He has heard directly from doctors working across the state about issues affecting patient care.

“The Liberal/National Coalition Government has made very strong commitments to improving the health system,” Dr Hemley said. “There’s a lot of work to be done to implement the Government’s commitments, and the pledges for increased transparency means that problems that have been covered up for years will be subject to scrutiny and action to improve patient care and better coordinate health services across the state."

“For example, once the Government publishes the outpatient waiting lists, we will be able to see the true scale of the problems in gaining access to health services for the most vulnerable Victorians. Then we’ll have to take steps to improve access and make sure that those who need health care get it in a timely manner."

“We also have a lot of work to do to work through the national health reform process. Doctors would like to see the National Health and Hospital Network Agreement translated into real health reform — reform that improves patient care.”

“While in opposition, the Minister was always keen to engage with the medical profession, to have the discussion and hear the arguments,” Dr Hemley said. “We don’t always agree, but he’s always happy to listen and engage. I look forward to continuing that relationship with the Minister in Government.”
