Doctors and orders (The Age, letter to the editor)
19 October 2010.
WYCHEPROOF GP Ken Mulligan's battle to retain his pharmacy dispensary within his own clinic (''It's un-Australian: 'Wychie', struggling to keep its GP, is up in arms over plans to sell off the pharmacy'', The Age, 16/10) is a prime example of why pharmacy ownership restrictions need to be relaxed. While pharmacists are allowed to own GP clinics, doctors are unable to run pharmacies or dispensaries, with a few exceptions.
Pharmacists are the only health professionals who have the exclusive right to the commercial benefits of running their healthcare business. If these business opportunities were available to doctors, rural practice might become more attractive to city doctors.
