Doctors urge caution on roads over Easter

Doctors urge caution on roads over Easter

01 April 2010

AMA Victoria Vice President and emergency physician Dr Stephen Parnis has urged Victorian motorists to take care on the roads over Easter and avoid fatigue by stopping for regular breaks.

"If you are going away, plan ahead and don’t set unrealistic goals for journeys,” he said, “Try to get a good night’s sleep the night before, and take time to stop and have a look at this wonderful country.”
Dr Parnis urged Victorians to take particular care on highways and country roads.
"Many of us are not used to driving on highways or country roads, where conditions can change quickly,” he said. “Please take care on country roads. If the roads are wet, make sure you slow down. “
"Victorian doctors deal with horrific injuries from road accidents. It is worth reminding drivers and passengers to always wear a seat belt in the car, and don’t drive while under the influence of alcohol.

“Doctors have a dream for long weekends: that they will be able to sit in emergency departments with nothing to do, rather than respond to road trauma.

“If motorists take care, have concern for other road users, and be patient, hopefully we all can make an emergency doctor happy this weekend.”

Seventy-nine Victorians have lost their lives on Victorian roads this year, which is ten per cent more than this time last year.
