Victoria deserves fair share of infrastructure funds
22 October 2010.
Victoria must not be overlooked for its fair share of the Commonwealth’s $1.8bn health and hospitals fund, AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley says.
"We have a quarter of the population and provide a quarter of the health services so we deserve a quarter of these Commonwealth funds. That means a share of $450 million of the Commonwealth’s health and hospitals fund."
Dr Hemley said Victorian health care was overlooked in the lead-up to the federal election and while some of the health and hospital funds were committed to projects in Queensland, NSW and Tasmania, nothing had been committed to improving Victoria’s hospitals.
"Many of Victoria’s rural and regional hospitals are in desperate need of infrastructure investments. We ’ve got hospitals that can’t physically fit the growing number of patients who come through their doors. We’ve got hospitals with cracked walls and outdated equipment.
"We’ve also got a number of metropolitan hospitals in need of redevelopments which won’t be eligible for these funds.
"Victoria has had a better track record than some other states in investing in infrastructure. NSW in particular has a woeful record on infrastructure spending – I’d hate for them to be rewarded for their intrastate failures and for Victorian to be penalised."
