Victorian hospitals report shows a need for vision

The latest Your Hospitals report shows Victoria’s hospital system is struggling to cope with the increased demand for services and needs an over-arching plan for improvement, AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley said today.
"Victorians continue to face long waits for emergency care and elective surgery because of a shortage of serviced beds in our public hospitals," Dr Hemley said.
"The Victorian Government has been funding new beds to catch up on the relative decline over the last seven years but these figures clearly show we need more beds to serve Victoria’s growing population.
"We need a plan, a vision for the future of Victoria’s public health services.
"All public hospital patients should be seen within the clinically appropriate times," Dr Hemley said. "Failure to treat patients within a clinically appropriate time increases the chances of poor outcomes."
"As we get closer to the election on 27 November, all political parties must articulate their vision for the future of public health care in this state," Dr Hemley said.
"We have seen a steady increase in the number of Victorians being let down by our public hospitals — it’s time for our political leaders to come up with a plan to better serve Victoria’s growing population."
