AMA Victoria welcomes Dr Mukesh Haikerwal’s appointment as Chair of WMA

AMA Victoria today congratulated its former President, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal (AO), who was elected Chair of the World Medical Association (WMA) Council at the 188th WMA Council Session in Sydney today.

“Dr Haikerwal’s appointment reflects the respect and high regard in which he is held by his medical colleagues around the world,” said current AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley.

“Dr Haikerwal is an old friend and trusted colleague; I wish him well in his new role as Chair of the WMA.”

The WMA is the peak body for international health policy and provides ethical guidance to doctors from more than 95 National Medical Associations.

Dr Hemley said that throughout his time as AMA Victoria President, Federal AMA President, and as a member of the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission (NHHRC), Dr Haikerwal was a strong and forceful advocate for doctors and their patients.

Dr Haikerwal served as President of AMA Victoria from 2001 – 2003. He then served as President of Federal AMA from 2005 – 2007.

Throughout all his national leadership roles with the AMA and other organisations, Dr Haikerwal has maintained his general practice in Altona North, Melbourne.

“AMA Victoria looks forward to working with Dr Haikerwal in his new role,” Dr Hemley said.
